Recharged

I had a really nice vacation this year. I was in LA for two weeks with Smark's family. This time we went out even more than previous years, exploring more of LA. We went hiking in Malibu, an Infected Mushroom concert on Christmas Eve in Hollywood, biking along Venice Beach, and reading/working at the 212 Pier coffee shop (really good Chai latte!). Of course we also did our fair share of shopping. I got over my obsession with rose macarons at La Provence, the noodle soup at Taiko, and the chocolate souffle at Bistro of Santa Monica. We also had nice bonding times with Smark's family at dinner and playing Mario Wii. Now I have two more weeks in Boston. It's 5pm and pitch black outside, haha.

Mother's Day Weekend

I visited Boston this weekend for Mother's Day, but actually mainly to move my things from my roommates' apartment to my mom's place. I also saw a lot of friends so it was really nice. I ate dinner at my mom's house Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in order to maximize the intake of good Chinese food. I needed to stock up for Florida.

So my mom complained that American mothers get breakfast in bed but she has to cook so actually every other day is Mother's Day for her. I felt a little bad, but at the same time, I think making food for me is the primary way my mom shows that she cares. On the other hand, maybe that is just because it's the primary way that I can accept affection from my mom. At any rate, I think we all had a good time.

Happy Chinese New Year's

It is now the year of the metal tiger. I celebrated by going to my mom's house for dinner with a bunch of friends. It was really fun and delicious. This year, Chinese New Year's happened to be on the same day as Valentine's day. We watched the CCTV New Year's Gala.

btw, I think it's really strange that this is a toy tiger. It looks more like a mouse. Actually, it looks kinda like Pokemon.

First Night Boston

I'm thinking of going to Boston's New Year's Eve celebrations on Thurs. Whooo, last day of the decade, although they say "officially" the last day is 2010 New Year's eve, but I'm not sure who that official is. Some things I kind of want to check out are Otis House Museum, Urban Dance, and Bhangra dance. I'm kind of disappointed there is not more restaurant discounts, though.

Krugman wrote a column about how this decade sucked economically. China did well, though, but maybe their time will come later.

New Year New Beginnings

Now, I don't really believe in "New Year's Resolutions" since the calendar year is a manmade construct anyway. But in general, I do believe in resolutions and "new beginnings."

So Happy New Year's!

Also, I cut my middle finger on my left hand, so it's actually kind of a fun challenge to type without it. It feels kind of weird.

Also also, I got into my second car accident of my life today, and it was kind of the same thing as the first, although this time it was really bad weather. The first time I was in a rush, and my friend was driving me crazy. Anyway, I kinda rolled into the guy in front of me. We got out of our cars and looked at the damage, but there wasn't really anything, not even a scratch, so he says he's just going to let it go. Hopefully, he will not change his mind and report me. And hopefully it won't happen again. I owe that guy one, although I didn't tell him because then he might be like, yeah you do, gimme some money.

Dragon Boat Festival

It's today.

My mom and I went. Actually, it wasn't very impressive, but it was still fun. It was the analog of Chinese Culture Day that was a festival we had every year in St. Louis at the Botanical Gardens. And they had dance performances! Yay

Pictures From Vacation

These are some pictures. Toby learned how to ride a bike in Vermont, and so we went on the trail. It went along a mountain stream and so we stopped to take a dip in the stream before heading back.

We also went to Toby's house to house-sit and take care of his parents' animals. They have a dog and cat.

Then when I got home, I gave myself a haircut.

first day of vacation

hey, i'm at the von trapp family lodge in stowe, vermont!

we had dinner and saw his parents and other people perform at shelburne farms.
classical music on the lawn.

toby and i were talking about memes the other day. so the selfish gene idea is that people aren't selfish, genes are, and then there are people who are like, viruses are selfish, too, and now there are people who are like, so are memes. so everyone's like, yeah, genes are like viruses are like memes. but i feel unconvinced/confused about what they really mean by that and what are the implications. what do you think?
