Yesterday I splurged at Aveda, which is this skin and hair care product store founded by Horst Rechelbacher, who sounds like an interesting guy.
Here's a TIME article about the environmental beauty products movement.
I think the products work well (maybe?) but definitely, I just really like how everything smells. I am also impressed that Aveda is supposedly at the forefront of environmental business. At the same time, it is hard to tell real impact from greenwashing.
Here are some arguments for natural/environmentally friendly beauty products:
ReplyDelete1) natural would mean the ingredients are extracted from a plant. there is still some sketchiness in this process - like they could still be using harsh chemicals during the extraction process, so i'm not sure how that works out. products with lots of synthetic chemicals most likely are creating a lot of toxic waste in the process
2) most of the synthetic chemicals in beauty products are not tested for long-term dermal/systemic exposure. Parabens have been linked to breast and prostate cancer. The reason to avoid them is b/c there is an overabundance of toxic estrogenic compounds (pesticides that are in the air and water and food, factory pollution, etc) in our environment.
i'll add more later
